Met Éireann has issued a Status Orange rain warning for Cork and Kerry, effective today, Saturday 5th October, from midnight to midnight.
The region is expected to experience very heavy and persistent rain throughout the day, with the highest accumulations in mountainous areas of Kerry and west Cork. The rain may be accompanied by thunderstorms, leading to the potential for significant flooding and hazardous conditions.
Impacts include:
- River and coastal flooding: Rivers may overflow due to the high volume of rainfall, with coastal areas particularly vulnerable.
- Dangerous travelling conditions: Roads are expected to be treacherous due to standing water, so drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution.
- Travel disruption: Both road and public transport services may face delays or cancellations due to the severe weather conditions.
This morning, residents in Cork and Kerry woke up to heavy downpours, which will persist into the afternoon. By later this evening, the rain is expected to ease somewhat and become patchy, but southerly winds will remain strong throughout the day. Temperatures will range between 14 and 17 degrees Celsius.
Tonight, the weather will remain cloudy with patchy rain and fresh southeasterly winds, which will gradually turn southwesterly overnight. Temperatures are expected to drop to between 8 and 11 degrees Celsius.
Local authorities are advising residents, particularly in flood-prone areas, to take necessary precautions, including the use of sandbags where required. Road users are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel and to monitor local updates for road closures and other advisories.
Met Éireann urges residents to stay vigilant and follow any updates or additional warnings that may be issued as conditions evolve.
