Uisce Éireann has announced the commencement of an upgrade at Whitegate Water Treatment Plant (WTP), a project set to enhance the drinking water infrastructure for over 10,300 homes and businesses in the area. This upgrade promises a safe, secure, and reliable water supply for the community served by the Whitegate Regional Water Supply.

This significant investment, undertaken in collaboration with Cork County Council, aims to address water quality concerns by implementing state-of-the-art treatment facilities. The new water treatment plant, designed to produce 6 million litres of water daily, will be constructed adjacent to the existing Kilva plant, which will subsequently be decommissioned.

Hugh Kennedy, Programme Manager for Uisce Éireann, highlighted the importance of the project:

“We’re delighted to be progressing with this important project. The issues with water quality are well known to the people of Whitegate and surrounding areas who have had to endure persistent boil water notices. This new and improved infrastructure will address these issues and enable the community to enjoy a reliable and safe water supply into the future.”

Kennedy also reminded customers that the Boil Water Notice remains in place, acknowledging the inconvenience and expressing gratitude for their patience and support during the project’s advancement.

The new facilities will include a 450,000-litre raw water balancing tank, a clear water tank, a new coagulation, flocculation, and clarification system, a new filtration system, and Ultraviolet (UV) Disinfection. These enhancements will ensure compliance with National and EU drinking water regulations.

The upgrade is being executed by Glanua on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with an expected completion date in 2026. Regular updates will be provided to stakeholders as the project progresses.

Uisce Éireann remains committed to delivering public drinking water and wastewater services across Ireland, continuously upgrading critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth, providing safe drinking water, and enhancing the environment.
