Uisce Éireann has commenced a targeted flushing programme in several areas across Cork City in response to an increase in reports of water discolouration. The move comes as part of the efforts by the dedicated Cork City Discolouration Taskforce, which has been closely monitoring the situation. Recent monitoring has indicated increased levels of discolouration, prompting the need for additional sampling and close coordination with the Health Service Executive (HSE).
The utility company continues to advise residents not to drink discoloured water. In the event of discolouration, Uisce Éireann recommends running the tap for up to 20 minutes, which typically restores the water to a clear colour. The water is safe to drink once it runs clear. However, if the issue persists, customers are encouraged to contact Uisce Éireann directly via their 24/7 customer care helpline at 1800 278 278. Reporting instances of discolouration assists the company in determining where flushing efforts should be focused.
The targeted flushing works began today, Friday, 30th August, and will continue over the weekend. The areas where planned flushing has commenced include:
- Douglas Road and surrounding areas
- South Douglas Road and surrounding areas
- Blarney Street, Cathedral Road, Gurranabraher, and surrounding areas
- Glenthorne
- Delaney Park
From tomorrow, Saturday, 31st August, the flushing works will extend to:
- Boreenmanna Road and all surrounding estates
- Greenmount, Bandon Road
- Bandon Road
- McCurtain Villas
- Rathmore Road and all surrounding areas
As the works progress through each area, signage will be placed to inform residents, and customers are advised to check the supply and services webpage for updates.
The flushing programme involves isolating and flushing small sections of the water network to remove any sediment build-up from old cast iron pipes. By isolating the flushing area from the larger network, Uisce Éireann minimises disruption and improves sediment removal. However, this process can temporarily increase the occurrence of discoloured water as the sediment is cleared through the system.
Uisce Éireann has expressed its gratitude to customers for their patience as the company continues efforts to reduce discolouration across Cork City. The utility also apologises for any inconvenience caused during this essential maintenance work.
For further information and advice, customers are encouraged to visit Uisce Éireann’s water quality page. The company has also launched a free text service to provide real-time updates on local supply issues. Customers can sign up with their Eircode and mobile number at www.water.ie.
