  • €6.8m project will accommodate future population growth in Inchigeelagh and enhance the local environment.

The completion of the Inchigeelagh Sewerage Scheme is a significant achievement for Uisce Éireann and Cork County Council, representing an investment of €6.8m in the local community. This infrastructure project involved the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant, pumping station, and pipelines to transport and treat untreated wastewater, ensuring the safe discharge of treated wastewater into the River Lee.

This project is a prime example of how investment in wastewater infrastructure can lead to positive outcomes for both the environment and the local community. The discharge of untreated wastewater into the River Lee has been a longstanding issue, impacting water quality and the integrity of the local environment. The new wastewater treatment plant will improve water quality in the River Lee, protecting recreational waters for activities such as swimming, fishing, and boating. Furthermore, it will safeguard the environment by reducing the amount of pollution entering the river, benefitting the flora and fauna that depend on it.

The investment in wastewater infrastructure also has significant social and economic benefits. The new wastewater treatment plant has been sized to accommodate future population growth, providing a platform for social and economic development in the area. This will enable the community to thrive, attracting new residents and businesses to the area, which, in turn, can create employment opportunities and contribute to the local economy.

It is noteworthy that the Inchigeelagh Sewerage Scheme was delivered on time and under budget, highlighting the successful collaboration between Uisce Éireann, Cork County Council, and Glan Agua. The project was completed in just 14 months, demonstrating the efficiency and effectiveness of the team involved. This bodes well for the ongoing works in Whitegate-Aghada, Castletownshend, and Ballycotton, which will build on the success of this project.

The Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Danny Collins, welcomed the completion of the Inchigeelagh Sewerage Scheme and acknowledged the role it will play in preserving the amenity of the River Lee and its hinterland. The project is an example of how investing in wastewater infrastructure can lead to a range of positive outcomes, benefiting the environment, the local community, and the wider economy. It is a testament to the dedication and commitment of those involved in the project, and it is hoped that similar projects will be undertaken in other areas, leading to a more sustainable and resilient future for all.
