A Transition Year student from Cork has achieved an extraordinary fundraising milestone, raising over €40,000 for Marymount Hospice at a charity coffee morning held earlier this week.

Rebecca Whelan, a student at Scoil Mhuire, was inspired to organise the event after witnessing the compassionate care her grandad received at Marymount Hospice before he passed away. Determined to give back, Rebecca partnered with Sabrina Hill of Kopper Hair Salon to host the coffee morning in Cork City Centre, with an open invitation for all to attend.

The event featured notable speakers, including:

  • Judge Sinead Behan, Cork Circuit Court.
  • Dr. Karie Dennehy, Palliative Medicine Consultant at Marymount Hospice.
  • Lizzy Dillon, former Microsoft senior executive.

Over 100 attendees joined the fundraiser, with many others contributing online by purchasing raffle tickets through Rebecca’s fundraising page on iDonate.ie. Their collective generosity brought the total raised to an impressive €40,000, which will directly benefit Marymount Hospice’s palliative care services.

Speaking at the event, Rebecca Whelan expressed her gratitude, stating:

“I am so delighted to remember my grandad today, in raising funds for Marymount Hospice so that they can continue to provide the very best level of palliative medical care, in such a world-class building with incredible staff. I’m so grateful to everyone who donated to the charity and to all the support I received from individuals, businesses and the speakers here today at Kopper.”

Marymount Hospice has long been a cornerstone of palliative care in Cork, providing vital services to patients and their families. Rebecca’s initiative ensures that this essential work can continue, offering comfort and care to those who need it most.
