Ireland provides a fantastic range of opportunities for people to work in industry sectors associated with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). High quality jobs which provide excellent salary levels, international travel opportunities and the opportunity to make a positive impact under headings such as health, climate change, community development, quality of life and the advancement of human knowledge are readily available.Ireland needs at least 20% of its 916,000 children and young learners currently in its schools to consider a career in STEM, if the country is to be able to maintain its trajectory as one of the foremost locations in the world for the tech industry. This is according to a group of industry leaders who have today launched STEM South West Expo 2022.Back for a third year, the virtual exhibition, which is free to students from all over the country, aims to bring younger learners to the fascinating and exciting world of STEM, with a view to giving these great minds of tomorrow a glimpse into the huge array of possibilities and opportunities that await if they choose a career in any of the STEM disciplines. Organisers have reported the “significant” impact the event has had in its short history with

9 in 10 students who attended previous events saying that they would now be more likely to choose a career in STEM having attended the virtual Expo.

The Expo will be held on April 6th from 5pm to 9pm and will feature some of the country’s largest employers exhibiting to students, parents/guardians, guidance counsellors and job seekers alike. Exhibitors include Johnson & Johnson, DePuy Synthes, Gilead Sciences, Plas Engineering, MTU, UCC, PM Group, PepsiCo, Astellas and many more.

Speaking at the launch of the event, An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin TD, stated:

This year’s event is more relevant than ever. As we emerge from a global pandemic, Ireland is making great headway in increasing employment figures, however, our skills shortage is emerging as a real barrier to the growth and development of our economy – and this is particularly applicable to the ICT sector. We must start thinking long term. We must let the teenagers of today know how much we will need their knowledge and talent in the years to come. We must help them along this road. But first, we must show them just how rewarding and exciting a career in our industry can be for them – and the endless possibilities that lie ahead should they choose to study anything in this field. There is now a digital aspect to every industry and every sector you can imagine, so regardless of your passion and interests having a foothold in a STEM subject is surely going to advance your chances of success in the working world.

STEM South West have once again excelled in terms of the speakers and exhibitors which have been attracted to participate in the 2022 event.Marguerite O Sullivan, Chairperson of STEM South West speaking of the line-up, said,

STEM provides fantastic opportunities for women. STEM roles are interesting, rewarding and fulfilling. They provide the opportunity to make a real difference in the world in which we live and for the people we care about. STEM organisations are actively seeking to achieve gender balance across all areas of their operations and across all levels within their organisations. Too many girls discontinue their interest in STEM subjects during the Leaving Certificate cycle. This is an issue that STEM South West is determined to tackle to ensure that these girls get every opportunity to fulfil their potential in the highly rewarding world of STEM.
