Met Éireann and other weather forecasting services have issued warnings ahead of a significant cold spell set to grip the country over the coming days, with temperatures expected to fall well below freezing.

Tonight’s Forecast: Bitter Cold with Freezing Fog

According to Met Éireann, tonight will be extremely cold and mostly dry, with temperatures dropping to between -8°C and -3°C. A severe frost is expected, and icy stretches will make roads hazardous. Light variable breezes will allow patches of freezing fog to develop, further complicating travel conditions.

Wednesday: Freezing Temperatures to Persist

Tomorrow morning, a bitterly cold start is forecast, with widespread frost and ice. Freezing fog patches may linger throughout the day in some areas, despite sunny spells. Daytime temperatures will remain well below normal, ranging from -1°C to +3°C, and many areas are likely to struggle to rise above freezing. There is also a chance of patchy rain along southern coasts.

Concerns Raised by Weather Alerts Ireland

Nick, from Weather Alerts Ireland, has expressed serious concern over the upcoming cold spell, highlighting that overnight temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday could fall as low as -10°C to -13°C in some areas according to high-resolution weather models.

“Temperatures this low are highly unusual for Ireland and could pose a significant danger to those without power or stranded due to snow,” Nick stated. He urged the public to check on elderly neighbours, ensure pets are kept indoors, and take precautions to stay warm during this exceptionally cold period.

Outlook for the Coming Days

  • Wednesday Night: Temperatures are expected to plummet again, with lows ranging from -8°C to -2°C. Wintry showers are possible in the northwest, and freezing fog is likely to return.
  • Thursday: Another day of sub-zero conditions is forecast, with scattered wintry showers in the north and west. The afternoon will see a gradual build-up of cloud in the southwest, with a band of rain, sleet, and snow moving in during the evening.
  • Thursday Night into Friday: As temperatures rise slightly overnight, precipitation will transition from snow to rain, with milder conditions expected by Friday morning.
  • Friday and the Weekend: Conditions will turn milder from Friday onwards, with daytime temperatures ranging from 4°C to 8°C over the weekend. However, further rainfall is expected, especially in the north.

Safety Advice

Given the exceptionally low temperatures forecast, motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution on the roads due to frost, ice, and potential freezing fog. Additionally, residents are urged to take extra care of vulnerable individuals, pets, and livestock during this period of severe cold.
