The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is advising road users to remain alert as Met Éireann forecasts milder weather over the weekend, potentially leading to localised flooding as snow and ice melt. While temperatures are set to rise, the thawing process poses new risks for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.
The RSA has issued several key warnings to ensure road safety during the transition to milder conditions. Drivers are urged to stay cautious, especially in areas where snow and ice may linger, such as sheltered spots, bends, and corners.
Key Advice for Road Users:
- Lingering Ice and Slush – Snow and ice may persist in some areas, particularly on less-travelled roads. Drivers should slow down and expect the unexpected, especially near bends.
- Increased Risk of Skidding – Localised flooding caused by melting snow increases the likelihood of skidding and aquaplaning. Slowing down is crucial during such conditions.
- Reduced Visibility – Thawing snow creates spray from passing vehicles, reducing visibility. Motorists should maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead and ensure their windshield washer fluid is topped up.
- Overhead Hazards – Pedestrians and cyclists are warned about falling snow and ice from buildings and trees. Staying clear of building edges can help avoid injury.
- Vehicle Maintenance – The RSA recommends cleaning front and rear lights and washing vehicles to remove dirt and minimise corrosion caused by salt and slush.
Beware of Sun Glare
With clearer skies expected alongside milder weather, sun glare becomes another significant risk. Drivers can be temporarily blinded by the sun’s brightness, particularly when travelling east in the mornings and west in the evenings.
To mitigate this risk, the RSA advises drivers to:
- Wear sunglasses to reduce glare.
- Keep windscreens clean, both inside and out, to prevent reflections and ensure maximum visibility.
- Carry extra water in case of delays due to traffic or road conditions.
- Stay alert for vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, and allow extra space when overtaking.
Other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, should also remain vigilant to the dangers posed by sun glare, particularly at road crossings and junctions.
