An Garda Síochána has revealed alarming figures from a national day of action held between 7am on Wednesday, 15th January 2025, and 7am this morning, aimed at tackling the use of mobile phones while driving.

During the 24-hour operation, Gardaí detected 266 drivers using their phones while driving, marking a sharp increase compared to the daily average of 60 recorded throughout 2024. This represents a four-fold rise in detections.

So far in 2025, 762 motorists have been issued Fixed Penalty Notices (FCPNs) for this offence, which carries a fine of €120 and three penalty points on the driver’s licence. In 2024, over 21,500 drivers received FCPNs for the same violation, highlighting the ongoing prevalence of this dangerous behaviour.

A Garda spokesperson emphasised the risks, stating:

“Driving while on your phone distracts you and takes both your eyes and your full attention away from the road. This is highly dangerous and potentially life-threatening for you and other road users. Yet, there is a very simple and easy solution – just don’t do it.”

The use of a mobile phone while driving significantly reduces a driver’s ability to react to road hazards and increases the likelihood of collisions. An Garda Síochána urges all drivers to prioritise road safety by keeping their phones out of reach and focusing fully on the task of driving.
