Today, 14th January 2025, Revenue officers, with the assistance of detector dog Merlin, seized approximately 3.5kgs of herbal cannabis in East Cork. The illegal drugs, with an estimated street value of €70,000, were uncovered as part of an intelligence-led operation.
The successful seizure resulted from a joint operation involving Revenue’s Customs Service, the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB), the Cork Divisional Drugs Unit, and Forensic Science Ireland, who are now analysing the confiscated drugs. Detector dog Merlin played a key role in identifying the concealed substances.
In connection with the seizure, a man in his 30s was arrested by An Garda Síochána. He is currently detained at a Cork Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.
This operation is part of Revenue’s ongoing efforts to combat organised crime groups involved in the importation, sale, and distribution of illegal substances across the country. Authorities continue to encourage the public to report any information related to drug smuggling in confidence by calling Revenue’s confidential line at 1800 295 295.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
