Significant infrastructure improvements are currently being implemented in the Glanmire and Riverstown areas as part of the comprehensive Glanmire Flood Relief Scheme, aiming to address long-standing flood concerns and enhance road safety and traffic flow.

The extensive project, led by Sorensen, encompasses a series of critical works, including the realignment of junctions, construction of new drainage systems, and the installation of modern traffic management solutions. One of the focal points of this initiative is the Hazelwood Junction, where substantial efforts are underway to improve the road network and safeguard against future flooding.

Traffic Management Measures

Residents and commuters are advised of ongoing traffic management controls, including a 3-way system currently in place on the R639 for deep drainage works. This will shortly transition to a 2-way system for approximately one week, before moving on to Hazelwood Road (L-2966) for further drainage improvements. The 3-way system will be reinstated upon commencement of these works.

Additional traffic management will be implemented on New Line Road (L-2966) between Copper Valley Vue and the junction opposite O’Connell Transport for site investigation works. The community is also alerted to ongoing work in Meadowbrook Estate, involving new drainage and pumping station construction, and in Sallybrook Industrial Estate for new drainage and culvert installation.

A significant feature of the project includes the construction of a retaining wall at O’Connor’s Funeral Home, integral to the flood defence strategy.

Upcoming Junction and Road Improvements

The scheme promises major enhancements at the Hazelwood Road/R639 Junction, including:

  • The construction of right turn and left turn filter lanes
  • Installation of traffic lights and pedestrian crossings
  • Development of cycle lanes in both directions
  • New footpath and bus stop installations
  • Comprehensive drainage upgrades in line with the Flood Relief Scheme

Sorensen is committed to minimising disruption and has planned for stop/go systems during peak hours and automated traffic lights during off-peak times. However, residents are encouraged to allocate additional travel time, especially during the morning rush hour, and consider alternative routes when possible.

Stay Informed

For real-time updates on the project and to minimise inconvenience, the public can subscribe to a free text alert system by sending GFRS to 50015. This service provides timely notifications on project progress and any significant traffic management changes.

Questions or concerns regarding the ongoing works can be directed to Sorensen’s liaison and traffic management officers, Elaine Cronin (086 032 6171) and David Sorensen (086 032 4488), respectively.

This ambitious project underscores a significant investment in the region’s infrastructure, promising enhanced flood protection and improved traffic management for the Glanmire and Riverstown areas. Sorensen appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation as these critical improvements are advanced.
