The Lord Mayor Councillor Deirdre Forde unveiled a plaque during the week at a new Cherry Blossom Grove of 100 trees planted at Fitzgerald’s Park to honour all those who died from Covid. The trees, consisting of a variety of 8 cherry blossom trees will provide most welcome colour in Spring each year in the Park, the idea of the commemorative Grove coming from the Japanese Hanami ( meaning Cherry blossom viewing),Cherry Blossom Festivals held in Spring in Japan each year.
The Grove leads from the lawn area to the nearby river, and the new planting will add to the existing mature trees of varying types familiar to all throughout the Park.
Lord Mayor Deirdre Forde stated:
“I am very satisfied that we have a very fitting, imaginative , memorial to all those who lost their lives to Covid in recent years, and that as well as bringing walks of colour in Spring to the City’s main Park, that it will have such a positive environmental impact as well.”
