The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Kieran McCarthy, has issued a call to Cork GAA clubs to submit their Decade of Centenaries commemorative jerseys for an upcoming exhibition. The exhibition, set to open in late September at the Public Museum in Fitzgerald’s Park, aims to celebrate Irish history, heritage, and sporting culture.
A Celebration of History and Sport
The exhibition will feature jerseys from local clubs and Cork intercounty teams that commemorate Irish revolutionary figures or events from the Decade of Centenaries (2016-2023). Jerseys honouring the martyred Lord Mayors, Terence MacSwiney and Tomás MacCurtáin, as well as those commemorating the 1916 Rising, will also be part of the display.
“To date, 16 jerseys have been submitted by Cork City and County clubs. We want to make sure everyone is included and to feature any more that might be out there,” said Lord Mayor McCarthy. Clubs such as Ballyphehane, Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh, Brian Dillon’s, Cork Boston GFC, Delaney’s, Diarmuid Ó Mathúna’s, Fermoy, Kilmichael, Na Piarsaigh, St. Vincent’s, and Valley Rovers have already contributed to the exhibition.
A Mobile and Virtual Experience
After its initial run at the Public Museum in Fitzgerald’s Park, the exhibition will become mobile, visiting locations like City Hall, the Central Library on Grand Parade, and other local areas of cultural and sporting significance. A virtual edition of the exhibit will also be launched later in the year.
Coordinated Effort
The exhibit is being coordinated by Cork City Council’s Commemorations working group, with assistance from Cork GAA and Public Museum curator, Dan Breen. The aim is to celebrate the rich tapestry of Cork’s history and its deep-rooted connection to Gaelic sports.
Clubs interested in contributing to the exhibition are encouraged to submit jerseys that relate to events or persons from the period 1916-1926. “We want to have your local club be a part of this celebration of history, heritage, and Irish sporting culture,” the Lord Mayor added.
