To mark World Toilet Day on 19 November, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Deirdre Forde visited the Ballinure Header Chamber in Mahon. The Lord Mayor’s visit to Ballinure highlights the importance of our wastewater infrastructure, raises awareness of how every one of us has a duty to protect this critical service, and acts as a catalyst to inspire action and tackle the problem of people inappropriately using their toilets as rubbish bins.
To help achieve our UN 2030 sustainable development goals, together with having a projected city population increase of 50% by 2040, Cork City Council, in conjunction with Irish Water, emphasise the value in looking after our toilets and wastewater networks and to “Only Flush 3 Ps – Pee, Poo, Paper”. When other items are flushed down our toilets it causes further issues for our wastewater system, clogs pipes and treatment facilities, causes Fat Bergs and can have a harmful impact on our natural environment through plastic and other forms of pollution.
Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Deirdre Forde said:
Since the beginning of September, various city primary schools have participated in a World Toilet Day school poster competition run by Cork City Council. World Toilet Day provides an opportunity to create awareness of pollution from the improper use of toilets and for everyone to get involved in the global movement to provide toilets and sanitation for all. Around 3.6 billion people on this planet lack access to safely managed sanitation, therefore I am asking you to please respect the facilities that are available to you and use your toilet properly.
