Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. Kieran McCarthy hosted a reception in Cork City Hall last week to celebrate the pupils of seven secondary schools in Cork City who took part in the Cork City Marathon Youth Challenge in June.

The introduction of a new 10k route in the Cork City Marathon gave Cork City Council the opportunity to encourage young people from the age of 15 up to take part in the marathon for the first time.

Youth Challenge coordinator, Liam Harris, a qualified athletics coach, was engaged to go out into schools and communities to promote the event, along with training plans, nutrition advice and a host of tips and tricks to those interested.

Seven schools rose to the challenge, with almost 100 pupils taking part. The schools were:

  • Douglas Community School;
  • Regina Mundi;
  • Scoil Eamon Rís;
  • Christ the King;
  • Colaiste Choilm;
  • Glanmire Community College;
  • North Presentation.

The Lord Mayor praised the participants, saying:

“Congratulations to all those who took part in the Cork City Marathon Youth Challenge and I was delighted to welcome the participants to City Hall today. The benefits of exercise and a healthy lifestyle are well known to all. I hope to see this event grow in the future. Those taking part can walk, jog or run the Youth Challenge – it’s about taking part, having fun, keeping fit and enjoying the unique excitement and buzz on marathon day.”

Liam Harris commented:

“Many of the schools ran as a team and we all know that being part of a team is something special, whether it’s in school, sport or work, but whether running as an individual, or in a team, the Youth Challenge is a fun, engaging, experience that shows character and commitment. it will be a unique experience and I encourage all Principals and PE teachers to encourage their students to take part.”

Having celebrated its 15th year, the Cork City Marathon is an internationally recognised marathon, with certification from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).  One of the fastest courses in Ireland, the Cork City Marathon has been praised for its inclusivity, ensuring that participants of varying ages and abilities are included in the marathon.

Cork City Marathon 2024 will take place on Sunday, June 2nd 2024. For comprehensive information on entry and on the event, course, training and supports, go to corkcitymarathon.ie or follow on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
