On November 14th, the HSE is inviting families and individuals to the Bantry Primary Care Centre from 10am to 12.30pm for a free health check event in honour of World Diabetes Day. The initiative, led by the HSE Integrated Care Diabetes Team West Cork, aims to provide vital screening and guidance for those concerned about diabetes, as well as tailored support for those already living with the condition.
With millions facing the daily challenges of diabetes management, World Diabetes Day this year focuses on well-being as a core element of diabetes care, encouraging people to address health concerns early.
Mari O’Donovan, Acting Head of Primary Care at HSE Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, highlights the significance of the event:
“World Diabetes Day is a great opportunity to think about health and lifestyle choices for you and your family. While health screening may indicate a need for follow-up with your GP or practice nurse, its main aim is to detect non-symptomatic disease or lifestyle risk factors that may lead to disease.”
The screening day promises attendees access to specialist diabetic nurses, who will be available to discuss health concerns and offer guidance. Additional support will be provided by podiatrists focusing on foot health, dieticians discussing nutrition, and a health promotion officer to guide participants on accessing local health and wellness resources.
Type 2 diabetes, a condition impacting 537 million adults worldwide and projected to affect 643 million by 2030, poses serious risks. Early detection and lifestyle modifications can delay or even prevent Type 2 diabetes in at-risk individuals, such as those with a family history of the disease or certain lifestyle factors.
Fra Wiseman, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Diabetes Integrated Care at Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, urges people to consider the importance of managing blood glucose levels to avoid complications:
“People are at risk of Type 2 Diabetes if their family member has a history of diabetes, if they have increased weight especially around the abdomen, a diet high in fat and processed foods, a sedentary lifestyle, are over 40, and have a history of pre-diabetes or gestational diabetes.
A diagnosis of diabetes can be challenging and often people are unsure how to manage their condition. The goal of diabetes care is living well. Diabetes can be self-managed, controlled, and people living with diabetes can enjoy a long and healthy life. The integrated diabetes team are here to guide you and help you take proactive steps to enhance your well-being for the future.”
This World Diabetes Day, take a proactive step towards health with Cork Kerry Community Healthcare. Whether for yourself or your family, the free health checks offer an opportunity to assess your health risks and learn about the support available locally to manage or prevent diabetes.
