Irish Water, working in partnership with Cork County Council, is replacing 1900m of problematic watermains in Jimmy’s Cross, Waterfall which will improve water quality for the community.

The project will commence in late April and form part of Irish Water’s National Leakage Reduction Programme. The works, being carried out by Ward and Burke Ltd on behalf of Irish Water, are expected to be completed by mid-July.

The section of works will take place along the Waterfall Station to Jimmy’s Cross Road (L2224) continuing Southwest along the L6279 through Corbally Cross to the first junction after the O’Donoghue Waste facility. A further section of works will take place along the Old Abbey Road (L2225) between Jimmy’s Cross and Abbeybridge.

Outlining the benefits the mains replacement will bring, Steven Blennerhassett from Irish Water, explained:

Replacing these old and problematic pipes in Waterfall will reduce the drinking water lost by leakage and will bring an all-round improvement to water quality for the local community.

Three road closures will be required during this project, but we aim to minimise any impact on customers.  There may be some short-term water outages and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice beforehand.

We understand that road works and water outages can be inconvenient, but our crews will make every effort to minimise disruption to local communities as we continue to improve the water supply in Cork and progress the National Leakage Reduction Programme.

To facilitate the safe delivery of the upgrades, three road closures are required. The L6279 Road will remain closed from late April to mid-May from Jimmy’s Cross to its junction with the L6284 Road toward Corran Cross.

The suggested eastbound diversion route is to proceed Southbound to Corran Cross and take the Waterfall Road (L2330) Westbound to Abbeybridge before heading north along the Old Abbey Road (L2225) to Jimmy’s Cross.

The second road closure will take place from early May to mid-July along the L2224 Jimmy’s Cross to Waterfall Station Cross Road. Westbound traffic should take the Waterfall Road (L2230) Southbound to its junction at Abbeybridge and head northbound along the Old Abbey Road to Jimmy’s Cross.

A third road closure is required to complete the works and will take place along the Old Abbey Road (L2225) between Jimmy’s Cross and Abbeybridge. The suggested diversion route for Southbound traffic is to continue east along the Jimmy’s Cross to Waterfall Station Cross Road (L2224) before taking the Waterfall Road (L2330) to Abbeybridge.
