Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee TD, has warmly welcomed the commencement of the 2023 campaign for the Recruit Prison Officer Competition, encouraging all those with a passion for contributing to society to apply for a position within the Irish Prison Service.

In a partnership with the Public Appointments Service, the Irish Prison Service plans to recruit up to 250 Recruit Prison Officers in 2023, with a further 300 positions expected in 2024. The competition represents a significant opportunity for individuals who are dedicated to making a lasting impact and seeking a fulfilling career within the justice system.

“I am delighted that applicants can now apply to join the Irish Prison Service through the 2023 Recruit Prison Officer Competition,” said Minister McEntee.

She added that the government would stand firm in supporting the Irish Prison Service’s mission to build safer and stronger communities.

The previous recruitment competition, held in 2022, witnessed an overwhelming response with over 2,000 applicants. This year’s competition is expected to be equally successful and will close at 3 pm, Thursday 28th September 2023.

The competition aims to attract individuals with the essential qualities of empathy, resilience, and dedication necessary to excel in this demanding yet rewarding profession.

Key Details of the Recruit Prison Officer Competition

  • Applications Opening: August 24, 2023, through the Public Appointments Service official website https://www.publicjobs.ie/en/.
  • Selection Process: Eligible candidates will undergo thorough assessments, including written tests, physical fitness evaluations, interviews, and background checks.
  • Training & Mentorship: Successful candidates will be offered comprehensive training and mentorship to equip them with the required skills and knowledge.
  • End Result: The competition will culminate in the appointment of several candidates as prison officers within the Irish Prison Service.

The opening of this competition underscores the continued commitment of the Irish Prison Service to enhancing community safety, promoting rehabilitation, and upholding the principles of the Justice system.
