As anticipation builds for the eagerly awaited rugby match between Munster and the Crusaders at Supervalu Páirc Uí Chaoimh today, Gardaí have issued comprehensive advice to ensure the safety and smooth travel of the estimated 41,000 fans expected to attend. The match, set to kick off at 5 pm on 03 February 2024, is a key event in the sporting calendar, and authorities are making extensive preparations to manage the influx of supporters.
General Travel Advice
Supporters are encouraged to make use of city centre car parks, which are open and conveniently located within walking distance of the stadium. In the interest of pedestrian safety, vehicles will be temporarily held back after the match to give priority to those on foot.
Gardaí highlight the importance of using public or shared transportation wherever possible. The 202 Bus from Merchants Quay, offering departures every 20 minutes to Mahon Point, is recommended as a convenient option for fans.
Official Car Pass Holders
Those in possession of official car passes are advised to approach the stadium from the Victoria Road roundabout and are urged to do so before 2 pm to avoid congestion.
Parking Regulations
Stringent parking regulations will be in effect to ensure that residential and business entrances, as well as parks, remain unobstructed. Parking on footpaths, in disability spaces, bus stops, or any area that could hinder emergency vehicle access is strictly prohibited.
Coach and Bus Parking
Coaches and buses have designated parking on Boreenmanna Road, positioned for easy access to the South City Link Road after the match, ensuring a smooth departure for groups travelling by these modes.
Casual Trading
Casual trading on the day of the match will be permitted only under licence and exclusively on Centre Park Road, ensuring a controlled and safe environment for all.
Road Closures
Significant road closures will be implemented to facilitate the event:
- From 9 am, closures will include parts of Monahan Road and Maryville, affecting several junctions with Blackrock Road and the Link Road (Marque Road).
- Additional closures from 2 pm will impact Churchyard Lane and Crab Lane at their junctions with Boreenmanna and Blackrock Roads, including Centre Park Rd and Monahan Rd at Victoria Road, mainly affecting vehicle access but with provisions for residents.
Drop-off Points
A designated drop-off area for taxis is established on Victoria Road, near Marina Walk. Public Service Vehicles have a set-down and pick-up zone on the Boreenmanna Road, close to the Maxol filling station, to facilitate easy access for fans.
Stadium Access and Departure
Access to the stadium is pedestrian-only, with routes from the city centre via Centre Park Road and Monahan Road, and from Boreenmanna Road via Churchyard Lane and onto Maryville. The proximity of these routes enables a brief walk to the stadium, with additional bus services enhancing connectivity.
In the aftermath of the match, attendees are requested to heed the directions of Gardaí and stewards. Given the large crowd, patience and cooperation will be crucial in ensuring everyone’s safety and enjoyment of this significant sporting event.
Fans and visitors are advised to plan their journeys in advance, allowing extra time for travel and following the specific guidance provided to ensure a memorable and trouble-free experience at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
