Catherine Martin T.D., Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, has announced €170,000 in funding to support the “All Right, All Night” Bystander Intervention campaign. This new initiative aims to educate and empower young people, aged 16-24, to stand up against harassment and violence, ensuring a safer night-time environment.
The programme was developed by Professor Louise Crowley of University College Cork (UCC) and draws from evidence and experiences collected in workshops with third-level students. The initiative seeks to teach practical skills for staying safe and intervening when witnessing inappropriate behaviour during social activities. By promoting inclusivity and respect, the workshops aim to foster a safer and more welcoming night-time economy for all.
Catherine Martin, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, commented:
“This training programme further supports our objectives for a safe and inclusive Night-Time Economy. It has been developed in direct response to a recommendation arising from our Night-Time Economy Youth Forum, in which young people highlighted the need for a training and education programme like this. I really welcome this initiative, which will help promote a safe and positive night-time environment for young people and equip them with the skills they need to support each other.”
Workshops will be piloted in various settings, including schools, sports clubs, and youth groups, with hopes to train approximately 1,870 young people over 2024 and 2025. In addition, the programme includes a train-the-trainer element to expand its reach, aiming to build lasting capacity for change across the country. A national social media campaign will also drive awareness and sign-ups for the training.
