Cork GAA has announced a large-scale voluntary initiative, with 92 clubs set to participate in cleaning up locations across Cork city and county this Saturday. The event, Cork GAA Community Clean-Up Day, coincides with World Clean-Up Day, which takes place the day before. This initiative aims to promote community engagement, raise environmental awareness, and encourage pride in shared spaces.

This marks the first time a County Board in Ireland has embarked on such an ambitious clean-up effort, with Cork GAA urging hurling, football, camogie, and ladies football clubs to proudly wear their colours while taking part.

The clean-up is a cornerstone of Cork GAA’s Sustainability Vision, aiming to collect and properly dispose of waste to foster a cleaner, healthier environment for all. Key highlights of the initiative include:

  • Environmental Impact: By clearing litter from public spaces, the clean-up will help protect wildlife, improve public health, and enhance the natural beauty of local communities.
  • Community Engagement: The event promotes community involvement, fostering unity and shared responsibility for environmental upkeep.
  • Youth Involvement: Young athletes and their families are encouraged to participate, teaching the next generation about environmental responsibility and community service.

The clean-up is supported by the Waste Enforcement Regional Lead Authorities (WERLAs) as part of their 2024 Anti-Dumping Initiative, and is conducted in partnership with Cork City Council, Cork County Council, and An Taisce. Participating clubs will also collaborate with local Tidy Towns committees.

Enda Buckley, Chair of Cork GAA Sustainability Committee, expressed pride in the initiative, stating:

“Sustainability is the bedrock of Cork GAA. The organisation is sustained by its communities where the passion for our games is passed from one generation to the next, and we must ensure we pass on the planet in a stronger position to the next generation. This initiative builds on the fantastic work already done by clubs and communities in our city and county and we are incredibly proud of all our members for organising it and getting so many people involved. Together we can make a difference.”

Clubs will be provided with equipment, additional supplies, and refreshments for all volunteers. Motorists are advised to exercise caution and be mindful of volunteers working on public roads, particularly between 10am and 2pm this Saturday.
