The latest figures from An Garda Síochána reveal that 481 drivers were detected exceeding speed limits in the initial 10 hours of National Slow Down Day, a 24-hour initiative running from 7 a.m. on Thursday, November 7, until 7 a.m. on Friday, November 8, 2024. The operation is aimed at encouraging compliance with speed regulations and enhancing safety on Irish roads, including those in Cork.

Local monitoring identified significant cases, such as a driver clocked at 121 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N71 in Ballinvrinsig, Waterfall, Cork. This offence is one of several high-speed cases detected nationwide, where law enforcement focuses on areas with a history of speed-related incidents.

Of the total detected drivers, 285 were intercepted directly by Gardaí, underscoring the initiative’s emphasis on immediate enforcement. An Garda Síochána expressed gratitude to those adhering to speed limits and stressed the importance of continued compliance to reduce speed-related collisions and safeguard all road users.

National Slow Down Day continues as Gardaí maintain a visible presence on the roads, with further updates expected on its progress. The operation serves as a reminder of the risks associated with speeding and reinforces the collective goal of safer roads across Cork and Ireland.
