Cork County Council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team convened this afternoon following the announcement of a Status Orange Rainfall Warning by Met Éireann for Cork. The warning is effective from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm tomorrow, Sunday, September 29th, and signals widespread persistent rain with some intense downpours expected.

A Status Yellow Rain and Wind Warning will accompany the Orange alert, effective from 5.00 am to 8.00 pm tomorrow. The combination of heavy rainfall and strong winds is expected to bring a range of challenges, including potential flooding, dangerous driving conditions, and possible travel disruption. The risk of fallen branches or trees has also been highlighted, particularly with trees currently in full leaf.

Cork County Council has been proactive in preparing for these conditions, with crews inspecting key high-risk areas and putting pumping arrangements in place where needed. Sandbags will be deployed to the most vulnerable areas as a precautionary measure.

Motorists are urged to take extra care, as localised heavy showers could lead to surface water flooding across the county, making driving conditions dangerous. The public is reminded to avoid driving through flowing or standing water and to be aware of cyclists, pedestrians, and other vulnerable road users.

Dursey Cable Car Operations Suspended

The Dursey Cable Car will not be operational on Sunday, September 29th, due to strong and gusty winds. Service will resume when weather conditions permit, and an inspection has taken place if necessary. Updates on the cable car’s status will be provided via Cork County Council’s social media channels.

High Seas Warning: Public Advised to Stay Safe

The public is also warned to stay away from coastal areas during this period of unsettled weather, with potential wave overtopping making conditions dangerous. The Council advises, “Stay Back, Stay High, Stay Dry.”
