Cork County Council has announced the completion of a €1.2M upgrade project at Fermoy Swimming Pool to significantly improve the energy performance of the facility, ensuring its continued service to the community for many years to come.
Supported by an SEAI grant of €271K, the completed works include the installation of 170 Solar PV panels, a new insulated roof, upgraded heating systems including the installation of two heat pumps to replace the old geothermal unit, new Air Handling Units, replacement of the hot water gas boiler for showers, triple-glazed windows and doors and external painting of the complex.
Welcoming the upgrade, Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Frank O’Flynn stated:
“The enhanced facilities at Fermoy Swimming Pool will benefit the entire community, providing a safe and energy-efficient environment for swimmers of all ages. With approximately 3,043 weekly visitors and 158,267 swimmers annually, the pool plays a vital role in promoting social participation in swimming. The upgraded facilities will cater to many groups, including schools, clubs, and wellness groups, and will continue to serve as a hub for community activities year-round. These energy saving interventions will ensure that the pool continues to serve the population of Fermoy and its surrounding hinterland for many more generations.”
Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Valerie O’Sullivan added:
“The upgrades at Fermoy Swimming Pool align with the Fermoy Town Development Plan while also meeting the specific energy requirements of a sports complex, improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in line with national decarbonisation goals. We are proud to offer these upgraded facilities that will serve the residents of Fermoy and surrounding areas for years to come.”
Originally constructed in the 1970s and redeveloped in 1996, Fermoy Swimming Pool serves over 150,000 customers annually and provides swimming lessons to over 950 children on a weekly basis. The facility is home to Fermoy Swimming Club, hosts a number of swimming galas and is extensively used by schools to provide lessons to students. Pool staff also operate a Swimming Learning Programme for adults and children.
