This Friday, 18th October, the newest recruits to Cork City Fire Brigade will become “Mercy Heroes” as they undertake a fundraising mission which will see them push and pull a vintage fire truck through the streets of Cork City in aid of the Mercy University Hospital Foundation’s Teens & Young Adult Appeal. Funds raised will support young patients of the Mercy University Hospital through the challenges that serious illness brings.

Starting from Cork City Fire Brigade’s Headquarters at 10 am, the firefighters will make stops for donations along Oliver Plunkett Street, Patrick Street, Opera Lane, and Daunt Square, before concluding their journey at Mercy University Hospital at approximately 3pm.

Speaking on behalf of Cork City Fire Brigade’s probationary firefighters, Peter Spillett said:

“The journey we will make on Friday will be easy in comparison to the journey that so many teenagers and young adults face as patients at ‘The Mercy’ as they endure serious illnesses like cancer. Our symbolic journey is a tribute to the resilience of these young patients facing the toughest battles of their lives, and we are proud to support Mercy Heroes and highlight the cause and raise funds.”

This fundraising mission is just one example of how throughout the entire month of October, schools, companies and community groups are coming together to support Mercy Heroes, the inspiring initiative that brings communities together annually to support Mercy University Hospital Foundation, and make a meaningful impact on the lives of those being treated at the Mercy University Hospital.

Deirdre Finn, Interim CEO and Head of Fundraising at the Mercy University Hospital Foundation emphasised how support for campaigns like Mercy Heroes can make such a difference in people’s lives:

“We want teenagers and young adults being treated in ‘The Mercy’ to get back to enjoying their lives and fulfilling their hopes and dreams like every young person deserves. We are grateful to Cork City Fire Brigade for supporting Mercy Heroes once again, and highlighting the importance of this.”

You can support the probationary firefighters by donating to their bucket collection at any stage of their journey this Friday in Cork City. If you can’t be there in person, you can still become a “Mercy Hero” by donating online or registering to support this cause atwww.mercyhospitalfoundation.ie.
