Cork City is gearing up for the annual Cork City Marathon, set to take place on Sunday, 2nd June 2024. The marathon, which covers a distance of 26.2 miles (42km), will result in significant road closures and traffic diversions throughout the city. An Garda Síochána has issued important advice and information for residents and visitors to ensure a smooth experience on race day.
General Advice
- Expect Delays: Road closures will commence at 5 am, with the race starting at 8.15 am on Patrick’s Street. Expect delays and plan to leave extra time for your journey.
- Road Closures: Patrick’s Street and surrounding city centre streets will be closed until 6 pm. Detailed road closure information is available at Corkcitymarathon.ie.
- Major Roads and Tunnels: The Jack Lynch Tunnel and South City Link will remain open, but expect delays.
- Kent Station Access: From 7.30 am to 10.30 am, access to Kent Station will require walking from Anglesea Street or Summerhill North Junction with the Lower Glanmire Road.
- Cork Airport Access: For access from the Northside, use the Jack Lynch Tunnel or Blarney to Anglers Rest Route to the Kinsale Road Roundabout.
Parking
- City Centre Car Parks: Parking will be available in city centre car parks.
- Black Ash Park and Ride: Open from 6.15 am to 5 pm, with buses running every 8-12 minutes.
Traffic Restrictions
The marathon course will be closed to traffic until the last participant passes through each area within the allowed 6-hour limit. Essential traffic will be escorted safely off the course by Gardaí.
Key Road Closures and Traffic Diversions
- Jack Lynch Tunnel: Open with a contra-flow in the southbound bore until 1 pm. Expect slower traffic.
- Carrigrohane Road: Outbound traffic only until 3 pm. Significant delays expected from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm.
- City Centre: Grand Parade, South Mall, Parnell Place, and Merchant’s Quay will be closed from 7.30 am to 10.30 am. St Patrick’s Street and adjoining streets will be closed from 5 am to 6 pm. North Main Street will be closed from 8 am to 4 pm.
- Western Road: Reduced to one lane inbound all day. Expect long delays, especially between 8.30 am and 9.30 am.
- Victoria Road, Albert Road, and Monahan’s Road: Closed to all but local traffic from 8 am to 1 pm.
Access to Key Locations
- Kent Station: No car access from 8 am to 11 am due to Lower Glanmire Road closure.
- Bus Station on Parnell Place: No car access between 8 am and 11 am. Restricted egress due to St Patrick’s Street closure.
- Approaching the City: Use Ring Roads (N25 South, R635 North) and Link Road (N27). Expect delays on all routes.
Hotspots and Severely Affected Areas
- St Patrick’s Street and Surrounding Areas: Closed from 5.30 am to 6 pm.
- Albert Road, Victoria Road, Centre Park Road, Monahan’s Road: Closed from 8 am to 12.30 pm.
- Blackrock, Ballyphehane/Togher/The Lough, Tory Top Park, Magazine Road, Orchard Road, Farranlea Road, Model Farm Road, Inchigaggin Lane, Mardyke Walk: Various closures and restrictions from 9 am to 3 pm.
Residents and visitors are advised to avoid driving on the marathon route if possible and to use alternative routes to minimise disruption. Stewards and Gardaí will be on hand to assist and manage traffic.
