The Cork City Marathon, a beacon of athleticism and community spirit, is set to return on June 2, 2024. With just 16 weeks until race day, Cork City Council has announced that registrations are open, inviting participants to be part of an event that promises to be more exhilarating than ever.
This year, the marathon, alongside its Half Marathon and 10K races, aims to surpass the success of previous years, drawing over 11,000 participants in 2023 from across Ireland and the world. From the United States to Asia, the international appeal of the marathon adds a rich diversity to the streets of Cork, making every mile a memory for runners and spectators alike.
Race Director Eamon Hayes, in collaboration with the ‘Runners Diary’ podcast hosts Brian Ahern and Damian Kenneally, offers invaluable training advice. A 16-week training plan is now accessible, designed to assist both novice and experienced runners in preparing for the event. Furthermore, strength and conditioning, often overlooked, are emphasized as vital components of training, alongside tailored nutrition plans to fuel the body for both training and recovery.
Participants are encouraged to integrate flexibility into their training schedules, accommodating work, family commitments, and unforeseen circumstances. The importance of rest days, gear testing, and finding a running group for motivation and support are also highlighted.
This year’s marathon will feature enhancements including additional water stations, improved race t-shirts, and a new medal design crafted from recycled metal, underscoring the event’s commitment to sustainability. The vibrant atmosphere is further enriched by live music and the involvement of the Cork School of Music and Let’s Play Cork, ensuring a festive experience for all.
The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Kieran McCarthy, praised the marathon for its inclusivity and the positive impact it has on the city’s economy and community spirit. Eamonn Hayes echoed this sentiment, expressing hopes for the 2024 marathon to be the best yet, with the support of Cork City Council and the dedication of the running community.
With the full marathon kicking off at 8:15 am, the half marathon at 10:15 am, and the 10k race at 8:45 am, participants and spectators are set for an unforgettable day. As an IAAF-certified event and a member of AIMS, the Cork City Marathon stands as a prestigious entry in the athletic calendar.
