Cork City Council is inviting residents to take part in Clean Air Night, an initiative aimed at reducing air pollution by encouraging households to minimise the burning of solid fuels. The event will take place on Friday, January 24, and focuses on raising awareness about air quality and its impact on health.

Each winter, the burning of fossil fuels in Cork homes significantly contributes to poor air quality, compounded by atmospheric conditions typical of the season. Solid fuels such as coal, peat, briquettes, and wood release harmful pollutants into the air, affecting both indoor and outdoor environments. According to the European Environment Agency, air pollution is linked to approximately 1,600 premature deaths annually in Ireland, with adverse effects on the lungs and heart.

Improving Air Quality Through Small Changes

Cork City Council is encouraging residents to consider simple actions for the event, such as delaying the lighting of fires or reducing solid fuel use in stoves or fireplaces. While participation in Clean Air Night is entirely voluntary, the council emphasises that even small adjustments can contribute to improved air quality and public health.

A spokesperson for Cork City Council highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating:

“Our aim is to foster greater awareness of air quality issues and encourage everyone to make small changes that, collectively, can lead to healthier air for all. We also acknowledge the challenges of energy poverty and understand that some households may need to rely on solid fuels for heating, particularly during cold weather.”

City Air Quality Strategy

Clean Air Night is part of the broader City Air Quality Strategy, which outlines seven key themes to improve air quality across Cork. These initiatives aim to address long-term issues and enhance the overall health of residents.
