A webinar on how Cork can learn from international cities of comparable size and a young person’s photo completion are just two of the events in train to stimulate discussion around the upcoming City Development Plan.
Cork City Council has launched the preliminary consultation process for the preparation of the vitally important City Development Plan (CDP) 2022-2028 which will provide the framework for how the city will grow and develop in the coming years.
This month’s event is the first of two public engagement webinars organised to kickstart discussion about the future of Cork. The focus of this webinar, on Thursday July 23 at 7pm, will be about learning from international experience, with a clear focus on cities of a comparable size to Cork.
Overseas speakers include Professor Wolf Daseking who was Director of City Planning for Freiburg in Germany for 25 years, during which time he oversaw the transformation of the city into a model of sustainable excellence as recognised by the Academy of Urbanism’s ‘European City of the Year’ award in 2010.
UK-based transport planner, Andreas Markides will also be providing his substantial sustainable transport learnings and talking about how creating attractive people-friendly streets and spaces is at the heart of creating successful compact cities.
The event will be moderated by will include an introductory speech from, Brendan O’Sullivan, Director of Programme, Centre for Planning Education and Research, at University College Cork.
A photo competition – one for primary school children and a second for secondary school children – has also been launched. Young people are invited to submit a photo showing what makes Cork City a great place to live and help us ensure that Cork continues to be a great place in the future as it grows and develops. The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Joe Kavanagh said: “We really want to hear your views on how Cork should develop. Cork is early in its journey to become a city of sustainable urban growth, a true counterbalance to Dublin. But this city doesn’t belong to me, to councillors or to people working in City Hall. This is ‘Our City – Our Future’ and so we’d love if you join the webinar and also encourage young people you know to start thinking about what they want in a future Cork and to grab a camera and get out and start snapping what is good about ‘my Cork City’.”
A detailed issues paper document, which sets out the city’s opportunities and challenges in the coming years, is available at www.corkcitydevelopmentplan.ie , at Cork City libraries and by appointment at the Planning Counter at Cork City Hall. A submission on the plan can be made as part of this initial public consultation from June 26 until August 21 2020.
