European Week of Sport: Involvement, Inclusion, Innovation

The European Week of Sport, commencing on 23 September, is an initiative designed to promote physical activity for all, irrespective of age, background, or fitness level. This year, the focus is on involvement, inclusion, and innovation, encouraging people to integrate exercise into their daily lives.

Cork: A City of Health & Wellbeing

Cork City Council is committed to fostering a healthier lifestyle for its residents. As outlined in its Corporate Plan, the council aims to establish Cork as a City of Health & Wellbeing. Among the various initiatives are the Cork City Marathon, which now includes a 10k race and is open to runners as young as 15. The marathon is unique in Ireland for offering concessions to participants on social welfare and Sanctuary Runners.

The council also supports weekly Parkruns, including junior versions for children aged 4–14. Most city parks now feature either an Outdoor Gym or Multi-Use Games Area, free of charge. Additionally, Walking Football sessions, in collaboration with the FAI, are held every Friday at the Mardyke for the more mature citizens.

Cork is increasingly becoming a cycle-friendly city, with extensive bike lanes and parking facilities. The annual Bike Week alone features over 100 events across the city. Moreover, €470,000 is distributed annually in grants to local sporting clubs, with additional financial support given to events like Ocean to City, the Lee Swim, and Cork City Sports.
