Cork City Council is advising the public to stay at home tomorrow, Tuesday as Met Eireann has issued a red wind warning for Cork.

Storm force winds are forecast between 6.00am on Tuesday, 07 December and 9pm on Tuesday, 07 December.

In addition to the red wind warning, which is likely to generate a high level of storm surge, and the forecasted heavy rainfall, Cork City Council is warning of very high astronomical Spring Tides in the morning.

Cork City Council has activated its Severe Weather Plan and its Crisis Management Team met this evening.

  • All public counters are closed at Cork City Hall tomorrow with any emergencies asked to contact the Customer Service Unit at 021-4924000.
  • All Cork City Council libraries and parks are closed tomorrow.
  • Black Ash Park and Ride is closed. Paul St and North Main St multi storey car parks are also closed.
  • All Cork city schools, HSE Covid-19 vaccination clinics and Covid-19 testing centres in Cork are also closed tomorrow.

Due to the forecasted heavy rainfall and red wind warning, Cork City Council is advising the public:

  • Stay at home. Don’t make any unnecessary journeys.
  • If you must travel, take care when driving as conditions will be hazardous.
  • Stay away from exposed quays, coasts, rivers and lakes.
  • Stay away from any fallen electricity lines or trees. Watch out for fallen debris.
  • Take measures to secure any loose outdoor items such as temporary structures, Christmas decorations, trampolines etc
  • Householders and builders should secure all construction sites.
  • Continue to monitor Met Eireann and Cork City Council social media and websites for updates

Tomorrow’s tidal surge, accompanied by forecasted strong south-easterly winds and heavy rain, will cause tide levels in excess of the highest astronomical tide.

 There is a risk of Tidal Flooding in the City Centre at these times.

Householders and Businesses should take Precautionary Measures to protect property from flooding.

Flooding  is likely to occur in the low-lying areas of the City Centre, in particular on:

  • Morrison’s Quay
  • Fr. Mathew Quay
  • Fr. Mathew Street
  • Union Quay
  • Trinity Bridge
  • South Terrace
  • Rutland Street

Motorists are advised not to park in any of the areas listed above between 6.00pm this evening and 9.00am tomorrow.

The situation will be monitored and further advice will issue.

Please note that while availability is limited, Cork City Council will seek to fulfil all necessary requests.

  • A number of road closures and traffic restrictions will be necessary. Diversions will be put in place to ensure traffic can still circulate. These will be introduced from early morning to reduce the impact of traffic moving through standing water. Any restrictions will be eased as appropriate.
  •  The City Council’s Customer Service Unit (CSU) will be operating from 7.00am until 7.00pm tomorrow, to allow the public contact us with any issue that may arise due to this severe weather event. The CSU can be contacted on 021-4924000.
