Cork City will once again come alive with activities this Saturday to celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, also known as Clean Air Day. This marks the second consecutive year that Cork will take part in this global initiative, following a successful inaugural event last year.
The theme for Clean Air Day 2024 is ‘Clean Air Now’, highlighting the urgent need for good air quality to safeguard our health and well-being. Poor air quality poses serious health risks, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with conditions like asthma. Simple, everyday actions can make a significant difference in improving the air we breathe and, in turn, our overall health.
Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Dan Boyle, emphasised the importance of taking practical steps to enhance air quality, stating:
“To help improve air quality, we can take practical steps such as walking, biking, using public transport more, or we can enhance our surroundings by greening our spaces with plants and trees or opt for less polluting fuels for home heating. By making these conscious decisions, we create a healthier environment for ourselves and future generations.”
A range of activities is planned for the day. From 10:30am to 1pm, part of the Grand Parade will be transformed into a play street zone, offering a safe space for people to enjoy. Artist Robyn Deasy will lead a creative engagement session, and visitors of all ages can learn about air quality science at a pop-up stand at the City Library. Researchers from University College Cork’s RADICAL project will host interactive demonstrations, including hands-on activities like using air quality sensors and exploring science through a microscope. Additionally, a Spinning Competition with prizes from TFI Bikes will take place.
At Tramore Valley Park, children aged 4 to 12+ can participate in the “Sports on the Green” initiative, with expert coaches from FAI Cork, Athletics Ireland, Cork GAA, and Munster Cricket providing tips in athletics, Gaelic games, soccer, and cricket. The event runs from 11am to 3:30pm.
