June 23rd is known all over Ireland as St. John’s Eve, but more specifically in Cork as “Bonfire Night.” A yearly tradition that is said to date back to pagan times where members of the public and communities build and light a bonfires, or “Bonna’s.” Fires were originally lit to honour the goddess Áine.

Cork City Council are hosting free, alcohol free events throughout the city on June 23rd 2017.

• Glenamoy Park, Mayfield: 5pm – 8pm
• Kilmore Park, Knocknaheeny: 5pm – 8pm
• Pophams Park, Farranree: 4pm – 7pm
• Loughmahon Park, Mahon: 5.30pm – 8.30pm
• Clashduv Park, Togher: 5pm – 9pm.

Cork City Council is currently working with residents of various estates around the city to help rule out illegal bonfires. Cork City Council requests that members of the public are do not provide any household goods for illegal bonfires.

If you wish to report bonfires or material collected for illegal bonfires which may pose a risk to health and safety or property please call the Cork County Council Emergency Services at 021-4966512.

Gardai will be on patrol in a number of housing estates in Cork’s northside. Please respect the emergency services and fire crews as they assist in extinguishing illegal bonfires.
