Uisce Éireann has issued a reminder to the approximately 10,000 customers affected by the Boil Water Notice (BWN) for the Whitegate Public Water Supply that the notice issued on 18 October remains in effect. This precautionary measure was taken to protect public health due to increased turbidity in the raw water source, which could impact the effectiveness of the disinfection process at the treatment plant.

The areas impacted include Aghada, Churchtown, Ballycotton, Saleen, Shanagarry, Ballinacura, and parts of Cloyne. Customers can check if their property is included by visiting the Uisce Éireann website or by calling the 24/7 customer care helpline at 1800 278 278.

Uisce Éireann has acknowledged the ongoing difficulties in lifting the BWN due to the current limitations of the water treatment plant. However, the organisation has begun a €22 million upgrade at the Whitegate Water Treatment Plant, which is expected to ensure a reliable and safe drinking water supply to more than 10,300 customers in the region. The upgraded plant will feature state-of-the-art water treatment systems and will address the frequent boil water notices experienced by residents in East Cork over recent years.

The upgrade will include the construction of a new treatment plant capable of processing 6 million litres of water per day and the decommissioning of the existing Kilva Water Treatment Plant.

Uisce Éireann has reassured the public that all drinking water standards comply with EU regulations, with strict safety margins in place. Boil Water Notices are issued in consultation with the HSE whenever a risk to water quality is identified. Vulnerable customers registered with Uisce Éireann are receiving direct communication regarding the BWN.

Water is safe to consume once boiled. Boiled water should be used for drinking, food preparation, brushing teeth, and making ice. Full guidance on safety measures is available on Uisce Éireann’s website.

For further updates, customers are encouraged to check Uisce Éireann’s website, the IWCare social media channels, or contact their 24/7 helpline.
