An Garda Síochána has issued a public appeal, encouraging anyone who has been a victim of Historical Sexual Abuse in Day and Boarding Schools run by Religious Orders to come forward and report the crimes. This appeal is directed towards individuals who believe they were subjected to criminal acts in such institutions, and it highlights the Garda’s commitment to investigating these serious matters.
Victims and those with information can report incidents through the following channels:
- Email: [email protected]
- Garda Child Sexual Abuse Reporting Line: 1800 555 222 – a free, confidential service available 24/7
- In person: By visiting your local Garda station
An Garda Síochána assures all those who make contact that they will receive a personal response as soon as possible. The appeal also acknowledges the significant emotional impact on individuals reporting such crimes, particularly those who may be sharing their experiences for the first time.
An Garda Síochána states that all reports will be treated with sensitivity, and where possible, investigations will be progressed. However, they also note that some cases may face limitations due to factors such as the lack of available evidence or the fact that suspects or witnesses may be deceased. In such cases, the Gardaí will clearly communicate these limitations to those affected.
Investigations will be overseen by the Garda National Protective Service Bureau and conducted by specially trained Gardaí within Divisional Protective Service Units across the country. Furthermore, An Garda Síochána urges anyone with information, even if they were a witness to such abuse, to come forward to aid in the investigation of these historical crimes.
For anyone impacted by this appeal, the Gardaí are ready to provide support and investigate the crimes with the utmost care and diligence.
