The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has confirmed that 16 Enforcement Orders were served on food businesses in September, including two businesses in Cork that faced serious breaches of food safety legislation.
- Glens Takeaway and Diner, Cappaughna, Glengarriff, was issued a Closure Order under the FSAI Act, 1998. An inspection revealed significant violations, including no hot water for cleaning equipment, a lack of handwashing facilities, and poor overall cleanliness. These issues were deemed to pose an immediate risk to public health. Additionally, a defective kitchen window could potentially allow pests to enter the premises.
- Cork Oriental Supermarket, located at 13 Dalton’s Avenue, Cork, faced prosecution for repeated hygiene breaches. The business was fined €7,000 for offences observed during inspections in July and October 2023. The offences were prosecuted under Regulation (EC) 852/2004 on the Hygiene of Foodstuffs.
Dr Pamela Byrne, Chief Executive, FSAI
, commented on the importance of pest control and maintaining hygiene standards across food businesses, stating:
“The number of Closure Orders served in September which listed evidence of widespread rodent or cockroach activity along with a lack of pest proofing, is very concerning. Pests can transmit very harmful pathogens to food, food surfaces, and equipment, and this presents a grave and immediate danger to public health.”
Consumers can access details of the Enforcement Orders on the FSAI’s website, where Closure Orders, Improvement Orders, and Prohibition Orders remain listed for set periods after compliance is achieved.
