As part of Operation Tara and ongoing investigations into the sale and supply of drugs in Cork City, Gardaí from the Cork City Divisional Drugs Unit stopped and searched a man in his 30s in the Douglas area on Wednesday, April 24th, 2024.

The individual assaulted a member of An Garda Síochána and attempted to flee from the scene before being apprehended. A quantity of heroin, valued in excess of €7,000 (analysis pending), and a sum of €600 in cash were recovered.

The man was taken to a Garda Station in Cork City, where he was subsequently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice Drugs Trafficking Act, 1996.

During a follow-up operation, Gardaí searched a residential property in the Douglas area and recovered heroin worth in excess of €37,000 (analysis pending).

The seized drugs will be forwarded to the Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) for analysis. The individual has since been charged and is due to appear before Cork District Court this morning, Thursday, April 25th, 2024.

This seizure forms part of Operation Tara; an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy, which was launched by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris on July 2nd, 2021. The focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle, and prosecute drug trafficking networks, at all levels – international, national, local – involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sale, and supply of controlled drugs.
