The European Commission has announced the launch of the latest round of the DiscoverEU initiative, offering 18-year-olds the chance to explore Europe at no cost. A total of 35,500 travel passes are available for young people born between 1 January and 31 December 2006.

To qualify, applicants must complete a quiz consisting of five questions about the European Union, followed by an additional question on the European Youth Portal. Candidates will be ranked based on their responses, and travel passes will be awarded accordingly. The initiative is open to young people from EU member states and Erasmus+ programme countries such as Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, and Türkiye. The application deadline is 16 October at 11:00 am Irish time (12:00 CET).

Successful applicants can embark on a European adventure for up to 30 days between 1 March 2025 and 31 May 2026, with the option to create their own travel itineraries or follow pre-planned routes. Examples include the “Feel Good Route,” which focuses on physical and mental well-being while travelling, and the DiscoverEU Culture Route, which highlights Europe’s rich cultural heritage. Participants can explore European Capitals of Culture, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and cities recognised for their accessibility efforts.

In addition to the free travel pass, participants will receive a discount card providing access to over 40,000 deals on public transport, accommodation, food, and other services. Erasmus+ National Agencies will also offer pre-departure information sessions and DiscoverEU meet-ups, which include learning opportunities.

Special provisions are available for participants with disabilities or health conditions, ensuring they receive the necessary support to participate fully. The DiscoverEU Inclusion Action provides grants to organisations working with young people facing fewer opportunities, offering extra funding and travel assistance where needed. Furthermore, while sustainable rail travel is encouraged, special arrangements will be made for those travelling from remote or isolated regions.
