On Saturday, June 13th Cork County Council brought close to 1,000 children from throughout the county together in a celebration of creativity. While the traditional annual gathering for Cruinniú na nÓg was not possible this year, due to social distancing requirements, the Council facilitated participation for young artists countywide through a series of online events. Supported through the Creative Ireland Programme, the productions were commissioned through the Council’s Library and Arts Service and involved a number of wonderful artists from throughout the County of Cork.

Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr. Ian Doyle thanked everyone involved, saying:

“I am incredibly proud of all the young people who joined us for this year’s Cruinniú na nÓg to celebrate creative talent in Cork County and nationwide. I’d especially like to congratulate the Students of Cappabue National School and Youghal’s Comhaltas, whose appearances on RTÉ 2 and TG4 respectively for Cruinniú na nÓg have made the County proud. The events continue to be available on YouTube and I welcome everyone to take part. I would like to thank all the artists who participated in this wonderful series of events for what has been a truly unique Cruinniú na nÓg.”

There are 15 video events and workshops available to view online, which will continue to be available as part of Cork County Council’s Summer Arts Programme 2020. The programme will see further video and online resources added over the coming months, providing a useful collection of creative children’s activities to entertain all ages this summer.

Cruinniú na nÓg in Cork County was coordinated by Cork County Council’s Culture Team and Library and Arts Service, along with the West Cork Arts Centre and Youghal Comhaltas. Cruinniú is nÓg is a national initiative the Council has committed to as part of the County Cork Culture and Creativity Strategy, which guides actions tailored to maximise culture and creativity in the County of Cork.
