Snapchat, it’s probably one of the most popular social media platforms at the moment but it can also be one of the most dangerous, and the new update from Snapchat may be even more so.

An update to the app which is popular amongst children and teens rolled out an update last night introducing the feature to see and track your friends on a map in real time. The new feature is called “SnapMap

It takes cyber stalking to a whole new level, and while agreed it may be a cool new feature and will prove popular with some people – lots of children use Snapchat and this makes their location public to anyone on their friends list. The new update also allows you to view stories from events, cities and towns around the globe which will prove immensely popular with musicians and artists.

If you are the parent of a young child, or teen using snapchat we would highly recommend that “Ghost” mode is enabled on their device in order to hide their location which is otherwise visible to everyone they have added as a friend. This feature is turned on by default.

To enable “Ghost Mode” to stop your location being shared:

  1. Pinch the screen at the camera screen to bring up the “SnapMap.”:
  2. Select the gear or settings icon in the top right.
  3. Enable “Ghost Mode.”
