Gardaí in Bandon are appealing to parents in relation to the Bandon Music Festival which takes place over the June Bank Holiday (31st May to 2nd June).
Gardaí would ask that parents remind their children it is illegal to purchase alcohol if you are under 18 years of age and that drinking alcohol in a public place could result in them being arrested.
Gardaí have been liaising with the pubs, security personal, the festival organising committee and the bus companies for a number of weeks. There will be a zero tolerance policy on underage drinking.
Any pubs found in breach of the liquor licencing act will be dealt with accordingly. Divisional Roads Policing Units will be carrying out checkpoints throughout the weekend with a particular focus on buses and taxis who are in breach of any PSV regulations. Drivers are reminded that large buses or taxis bringing passengers are public places under the Criminal Justice Public Order Act – any offences committed i.e consuming alcohol on them can be dealt with by Gardaí.
Any vehicle found overcrowding will also be dealt with.
Speaking at Bandon Garda Station today, Inspector Brian Murphy said “Last year we had issues with large groups of youths arriving into Bandon in a drunken state which created a significant risk. This is not only dangerous to the youths themselves, but it can put huge pressure on Gardaí and other emergency services. Last year we made over 20 arrests under the public order act, a lot of these people were under 18 years of age.”
We will have extra Gardaí on duty on patrol in Bandon for the weekend, supported by the Roads Policing Unit and Divisional Drugs Unit. Any incidents such as public drinking will be dealt with swiftly. The Bandon Music Festival is a great weekend in the town, we would just ask that you be safe, mind your belongings and look after each other. Please also respect the local residents and businesses in the town during the festival and most of all, enjoy the weekend.”
During the weekend there will be a lot of extra traffic so please be patient and follow the direction of Gardaí and stewards.
- Emmet Row will be closed from Saturday 25th May from approx. 11:30am until Monday 27th May at approx. 3am.
