If you grew up in the 90’s, there’s probably lots of things that make you feel nostalgic. However, one thing in particular will stand out to 90’s babies – Bebo. There was no better feeling when you finished school, logging into Bebo and MSN Messenger (who remembers that too?!) to chat to your friends in the evening.

Bebo was founded in 2005 by husband and wife, Michael and Xochi Birch. The name ‘Bebo’ stands for ‘Blog Early, Blog Often.’

Following its launch 2005 the social media network exploded, and grew in popularity with teens, and adults all over the world. It overtook the then popular MySpace (we’re getting really nostalgic here now) as the leading Social Media platform at that time.

The popularity of the social network declined slowly following its huge growth, and as other social network sites (such as Facebook) took over.

In 2013 the company filed for bankruptcy, and in July 2013 the original founders of the company purchased it back for $1 million. In 2019, Amazon, through their subsidiary Twitch, acquired Bebo for $25 million after outbidding popular messaging app, Discord.

What do we hope returns with Bebo?

Thinking back to our days on Bebo, we remember things such as;

  • Top 16 Friends (but who would we put there now?),
  • Flashboxes (cringe!),
  • Friend Quizes (yes, we all did them 🙈)
  • wRiTing lyk dis 2k5 (how did one get into journalism writing like that 🤷‍♂️)
  • Your ‘Other Half’ (lets be honest, it was rarely someone you were in a relationship with)
  • Skins (Learning how to use Photoshop or Fireworks to create skins, wanted by everyone in your school!)
  • Trying to beat your friends ‘Profile View’ score (who were the popular kids back in the day?)
  • and the ability to ‘Share The Luv ♥️.’ (Who’s getting your Luv? It better be us…)

Bebo is currently in Private Beta testing, is expected to launch in February 2021. The platform have already confirmed that the former POTUS has been banned from their platform:

On the good news front, Trump is banned from bebo before we’ve even launched. The world really IS moving forward!
