The National Emergency Co-ordination Group (NECG) convened this morning, Wednesday, 8 January, to address the ongoing disruptions caused by the persistent cold weather across Ireland. Met Éireann has issued an Orange Weather Warning, effective from 6pm this evening until 11am Thursday, with severe frost, ice, and snow predicted to create dangerous travel conditions and potential animal welfare concerns.
Weather Outlook
Tonight’s temperatures are expected to plummet to between -3°C and -8°C, with widespread frost, ice, and freezing fog. Thursday is forecasted to remain bitterly cold, with frost and ice lingering in many areas throughout the day.
Public Safety and Support Services
Keith Leonard, National Director of the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management, urged the public to remain vigilant:
“Unfortunately, we are seeing no let-up in the bitterly cold weather conditions. I urge everyone to take extra caution when travelling and to check in on vulnerable neighbours during this period.”
Local authorities have implemented Cold Weather Initiatives to support rough sleepers, with emergency beds available nationwide. Outreach teams are actively encouraging rough sleepers to avail of these facilities. In Dublin, the Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE) app allows the public to report rough sleepers’ locations.
Travel and Transport
Public transport continues to operate, though disruptions may occur. Travellers are advised to check with operators and allow additional time for journeys. Motorists are urged to treat all roads as treacherous, travel only if essential, and drive cautiously to reduce risks. Cyclists and pedestrians should also exercise extreme care, with icy conditions making paths and roads hazardous.
Schools and Early Learning Centres
Most schools opened today, though some remain closed in counties with severe weather. Decisions to close are made by individual school management based on local conditions. Early Learning and Childcare settings are similarly assessing risks locally to ensure safety.
Utilities and Infrastructure
- ESB Networks: Crews are working to restore power in affected areas. Fallen wires should be reported immediately to 1800 372 999.
- Uisce Éireann: Residents are reminded to protect water pipes from freezing and avoid leaving taps running, which can impact local water supplies.
Key Public Safety Advice

- Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours.
- For road safety, ensure tyres are properly inflated, drive slowly, and use dipped headlights in foggy conditions.
