Record number of applications for 2021 GP Training Schemes.

#BEaGP social media campaign a big success for 4th year in a row.

The number of applications for GP Training for the 2021 programme was the highest ever, the Irish College of General Practitioners has announced.

The number of applications was 685, an increase of 48.6% on last year (461).

Applications closed for the 2021 programme on 12th November. However, there was an extension until Thursday 26th November at 5pm for those affected by the Regulated Professions (Health and Social Care) (Amendments) Bill 2020.

Mr Fintan Foy, CEO, said:

Over the last number of years, we have seen a very positive trajectory in the number of applications for GP training, increasing year on year. I think this indicates that General Practice is still seen as an attractive specialty and also an attractive, flexible, fulfilling career.

Mr Foy added: However, the challenge remains that while we can provide excellent training for a large number of doctors, it is crucial that the Government, the HSE and the Department of Health do everything within their power to ensure that we do not lose these highly-qualified doctors to emigration on completion of training.

Dr Karena Hanley, Director of Training at ICGP said:

As national demand for GPs continues to increase, we have increased the number of training places available this year. We hope that this trajectory will continue into next year, and look forward to working with the HSE to meet these targets.”
