A Cork publican has stepped forward to offer their establishments as safe spaces for teenagers and young adults in response to rising safety concerns in the city. Citing an increase in troublesome behaviour, including harassment and assaults, the publican has opened three premises across Cork as places of refuge for those who may find themselves in distress.
The initiative comes as the publican highlights the changing nature of the city’s nightlife and the growing vulnerability of young people. Reflecting on the past, they remarked how Cork city – fondly referred to as “town” – was once a safer place where people looked out for each other. However, recent years have seen a marked rise in antisocial behaviour, with gangs and individuals struggling with addiction creating an environment of fear for many, particularly the younger generation.
Speaking out on the issue, the publican expressed frustration at the challenges facing An Garda Síochána, noting that officers are often unfairly blamed for incidents despite their limited resources. The publican believes it is time for local business owners, especially those operating after dark, to play a greater role in ensuring the safety of patrons and passersby alike.
“We, as after-dark business operators, have a duty to try and provide safe opportunities for people to enjoy the city when they venture in, as we are the ones drawing them into the city,” the publican stated.
As part of this initiative, the publican is encouraging parents to let their children know that, should they encounter any difficulties – whether being separated from friends, losing a phone, or facing unwanted harassment – they can head to one of the listed premises. The publican and their staff are committed to contacting parents and ensuring young people are safe until they can be collected.
This new community-focused initiative is set to begin this weekend and is intended to be a long-term measure. The publican is also calling for other local businesses to follow their lead and offer similar services to give families peace of mind.
The premises participating in the initiative are:
- An Bodhran, 42 Oliver Plunkett St, Cork – contact Sharon or Peter at 021 427 4544
- Goldbergs, 4 Victoria Road, Cork – contact Lauren, James, or Sean at 021 496 5848
- The Pier Head, Blackrock, Cork – contact David, Patrick, or Cormac at 021 435 8401
With the offer of a safe haven for Cork’s youth, this publican is hopeful that more businesses will come on board, ensuring that everyone can feel secure when enjoying the city, both day and night.
