Cork County Council has progressed the Kanturk Link Road to Tender Stage. The project will accommodate motor, pedestrian and cycling traffic between Bluepool Upper and Mill Road and will improve connectivity and access to Kanturk Town Centre and to the proposed new national school on Mill Road for a variety of commuters.
This project will be delivered under the Council’s Project ACT (Activating County Towns) for Kanturk, and will facilitate future development of lands in the area, while reducing traffic and congestion in Kanturk town centre. Tenders are due on 15th of September 2020 with works envisaged to begin mid October and finish in August 2021.
The proposed works include the construction of approximately 450 metres of new carriageway, installation of footpaths and cycle tracks, surface water drainage, installation of public lighting and ducting. The provision of the Link Road will provide a safer environment for all road users especially for vulnerable road users, while new footpaths and cycle tracks will foster sustainable modes of transportation for the community.
The project is being funded by Cork County Council and the Department of Rural and Community Development through the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund.
Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Mary Linehan Foley welcomed the advancement of the project:
“The town of Kanturk provides vital amenities for its residents and the surrounding hinterlands. These planned developments will greatly improve accessibility in the town and enable the community to grow sustainably moving forward, while enhancing the safety of all road users.”
Deputy Chief Executive of Cork County Council James Fogarty said:
“The development of sustainable transport options, which enhance safety, reduce congestion, and facilitate further growth in Cork County are vital to Project ACT and to meeting the counties goals for Project Ireland 2040. Kanturk will benefit from this new infrastructure for years to come, securing its status as a great place to live, work and do business in.”
