  • ICGP’S Winter Meeting goes Virtual this year, with theme of “Managing Uncertainty, Preparing for the Future”.

The Irish College of General Practitioners holds its Winter Meeting this year as a half-day virtual gathering on Saturday November 7th starting at 9am.

The theme of this year’s meeting is “General Practice- Managing Uncertainty, Preparing for the Future”, with updates on the COVID-19 pandemic and to include an emphasis on where next. This session will be led by NUIG’s Prof Máire Connolly, Special Public Health Advisor with the Department of Health; the panellists for this discussion include Dr Mary Horgan, Prof. Martin Cormican, Prof. Peter Lunn, Dr Mary Favier and Dr Nuala O’Connor.

The Winter Meeting will also hear a presentation on Early Intervention Psychosis from Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Karen O’Connor, and “10 Things to Know about Food Allergy” by the RCSI’s Professor Jonathan Hourihane.

Under the “Anything but Covid” section, the ICGP’s 5 Clinical Leads in Chronic Disease Management will give informative updates for GPs.

Dr Margaret O’Riordan, the President of the Irish College of General Practitioners, said:

While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to dominate all our lives, it’s important to emphasise that GPs are working with their patients to deliver as “normal” a range of health services as possible, and this Winter Meeting reflects that.

We need the public to know that general practice is open and here for all illnesses, COVID-19 related or not.  In the first lockdown in the spring, we know a lot of patients felt unwilling to contact their GP because they may have thought we were too busy, or it wasn’t possible. That meant we missed a lot of potential diseases at early stages.

We emphasise that GPs are open for patients but we ask that you phone first. We can’t have “walk-ins” and more of our consultations are virtual. We do see higher levels of anxiety but that’s to be expected in this time of pandemic restrictions.”
