Presented by Cork City Council, Glow, A Cork Christmas Celebration returns this weekend and sees Bishop Lucey Park and the Grand Parade transformed into a hive of activity with choirs, food traders, and GLOW’s Green Elves. The much-loved Ferris Wheel and the Christmas Markets open on Friday at 12noon while Bishop Lucey Park opens at 4.30pm.
The Greening of GLOW continues this year. The initiative which began in 2016 has seen the progression of the festival to now be a zero-landfill event.

All food and goods sold at the market stalls are packaged in certified compostable packaging, which can be deposited along with leftover food and cutlery (which is also compostable) in the compost bins, while paper, drink cans or bottles can be deposited in the recycling bins.

Throughout GLOW, friendly Green Elves will be on the Grand Parade to help members of the public make the right bin choice and to answer any questions that people might have about the initiative.

Last weekend was the first weekend of GLOW and 860kg of waste was generated. Of this, 600kg was sent for composting and 260kg was sent for recycling. No waste went to landfill.

The Christmas Market features a wide variety of traders including Keith’s Crepes, Knockout Pizza, O Flynn Sausages, Bad Boys BBQ, Canard Sauvage, Dinky Donuts, Sultan Foods, Volcano Pizza and Rebel Burger with all market traders supporting the greening of GLOW.

This weekend also sees choirs from all over Cork perform at GLOW to raise money for charity. Friday sees performances from Club Ceoil Knocknaheeny, GMC Beats, Youth Work Ireland Cork, Scoil Eamonn Rís and St Finbarre’s NS, while Carrigaline Gospel Choir, Cork City Male Voice Choir and Ukidukes will perform on Saturday. On Sunday groups performing include Ballinspittle Comhaltas, St Nicolas Brass Band, Butter Exchange Band, Douglas Comhaltas and Spotlight Performing Arts.

GLOW opens tomorrow with the Christmas Markets and the Ferris Wheel open at 12noon and The National Elf Test Centre in Bishop Lucey Park open at 4.30pm. GLOW runs every weekend until December 22nd.
