Gardaí in Cork City have been actively targeting distracted driving by utilising an unmarked Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) to monitor drivers. The operation, aimed at improving road safety, has already resulted in fines and penalty points for offenders.

In one instance, the drivers of two separate cars were detected using their phones while driving. Both motorists were issued a €120 fine and received three penalty points on their licences after being caught swiping on their phones.

Using an unmarked HGV allows Gardaí to observe driver behaviour from an elevated position, making it easier to detect illegal mobile phone use, which is a significant contributor to road accidents.

Gardaí continue to remind motorists that using a mobile phone while driving is not only illegal but also highly dangerous. The penalty serves as a reminder of the importance of staying focused on the road at all times.

For those caught using their phones while driving, the consequences can include fines, penalty points, and an increased risk of causing or being involved in an accident. Gardaí urge drivers to prioritise safety over distractions and to pull over safely if phone use is absolutely necessary.
