Cobh and district is set to benefit from a host of improvement works recently announced by Cork County Council, from road upgrades to pedestrian friendly measures and support for town enhancements.
Cork County Council has recently awarded the contract for the 2020 Cobh & East Cork Municipal Districts Roads Resurfacing Programme to Roadstone Ltd. The contract includes 11 sites throughout the East Cork region, covering works in rural and urban roads throughout the district. The scope of works includes road resurfacing, major road reconstruction, traffic-calming measures, drainage and associated works. The estimated investment in the East Cork Region for this project is €2.5 million. Road closures and traffic management will be necessary to carry out the works, which will enhance the road network and improve road safety for all road users. It is envisaged that works will take place between August and October.
Further safety and accessibility enhancements will be delivered in the region by Cork County Council through the Cobh Municipal District Footpath Programme 2020. The contract awarded to Linehan Civil Engineering Ltd will see an investment of almost €115k including the installation of new pedestrian crossings, new footpaths and footpath repairs. These works are planned for the months of August to October at various locations within the Municipal District, including Cobh and Little Island.
The Cobh Paint Scheme for 2020 has also been announced as part of Cork County Council’s Project ACT initiative to help activate the county’s towns during the COVID-19 crisis. The fund was agreed in collaboration with the local Town Team, which includes representatives from the Council and its elected members, Cobh & Harbour Chamber, Cobh Tidy Towns, Cobh Tourism, and other local business interests. The scheme is designed to enhance the award winning beauty of the scenic town, to promote tourism and boost the local economy.
Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Mary Linehan Foley highlighted how these measures will be warmly welcomed:
“The community of Cobh has shown remarkable resilience this year and these new schemes will be of great benefit to residents and visitors alike. Cobh is the gateway to East Cork for many, it is an area rich in history and has so much to offer tourists or day trippers. I know that the improvements here will have many wide reaching benefits for the community. I’d like to congratulate the Town Team for their innovation and hard work so far.”

“Cobh is a vital town in terms of its location in Cork Harbour and is also a world renowned tourism and heritage site. This has been a central element of our Project ACT initiative and contributes to the Council’s goal of ensuring that our towns and villages are great places to live, securing safety, accessibility and pride of place.”
